Move the sliders to see about what you could pay in Income Tax and National Insurance once your miles are claimed at HMRC's rate. It opens on a driver doing about 25 hours a week across a few apps. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere.

Amazon says most Flex drivers earn £14 to £18 an hour of block. Food apps are about £11 to £15 an hour you are busy, less once waiting is counted. The Uber figure is before costs.

Only miles on the job count. Home to the depot and back home is commuting, which HMRC does not allow. GOV.UK: travel.

£1,400 is a guide figure for 25 hours a week or more. Zego's yearly car policy for food delivery starts from £1,392.69. For Uber we use £1,977.90, the price Zego says 10% of private hire drivers paid or less.

Other costs you can take off
hours

HMRC's flat rate: £10 a month for 25 to 50 hours, £18 for 51 to 100 hours and £26 for 101 hours or more. Under 25 hours it is £0. GOV.UK: working from home.

Extras you pay for the job

You claim only the part of the bill used for work. GOV.UK's example is a £200 bill with £70 of business calls, so you claim £70. We start at £15 a month with half for work, which is £90. GOV.UK: office, property and equipment.

Parking and tolls go on top of the mileage rate. Fines never count. HMRC manual BIM75005.

Other income

If ticked, this estimate gives your driving profit none of the £12,570 tax free Personal Allowance.

Your estimate

You could pay £0 Income Tax and £0 Class 4 National Insurance.

Without claiming your miles you would pay about £861.

Past about 30 hours a week you start paying tax, if you have no other income.

For comparison, the National Living Wage for employees aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from April 2026.

Hours here are time on the apps only. Driving to the first job and home again adds time and fuel that this does not count. GOV.UK: minimum wage rates.

An estimate for the 2026/27 tax year. Your own figures may differ. It does not cover the £100,000 allowance taper, student loans or Scottish tax rates.

How the sums work

Mileage comes off your profit, not off your tax bill. Each business mile lowers your profit by 55p for the first 10,000 in the tax year and 25p after that. The rate is instead of your real car costs, so fuel, insurance, servicing and repairs are not claimed as well. GOV.UK: simplified expenses for vehicles.

Once you use the flat rate for a car you keep using it for that car. For a high mileage van or private hire car your real costs can sometimes be more than the flat rate, so it is worth checking before your first claim.

A job or pension changes the result. It uses your £12,570 Personal Allowance, so Income Tax could start on your first pound of driving profit. Class 4 is worked on your driving profit alone, so it still starts at £12,570.
